The Child- Centered Disaster Risk Reduction Action Plans for Municipalities Project, implemented by TESEV with the support of UNICEF and in cooperation with the Union of Municipalities of Turkey, aims to support municipalities in Türkiye to develop data-driven child-oriented disaster risk reduction actions. For this purpose, a capacity building and roundtable event was organized in Istanbul, one of the pilot provinces of the project, with experts from Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

The event started with the opening speeches of IBB Child Services Directorate and UNICEF Türkiye. Following, Prof. Dr. Murat Güvenç presented child-centered disaster risk maps of Istanbul prepared for the municipality’s action plan focusing on preparation process and importance of neighborhood scale maps. TESEV Project Coordinator Gizem Fidan’s presentation focused on how to use maps for data-driven child-focused disaster risk reduction policies and service planning while exemplifying how to layer maps with other data. Presentations ended with brief information on the Istanbul Child- Focused Disaster Risk Reduction Action Plan.

The second part of the event which was a round table session enabled participants to discuss the topics presented, develop new ideas together and provide feedback. The action plan will be revised with the ideas that came forward in this last session of the event.
