Developing a Model for Data-Driven Disaster Governance in Municipalities Project, supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands’ MATRA Fund, aims at improving data-driven disaster governance of municipalities in Türkiye in accordance with international disaster management frameworks and local vulnerabilities and needs. Mersin is selected as the pilot city following its role in the aftermath of February 6th 2023 earthquakes and as a city that is under relatively higher risks of earthquakes, climate crisis and other natural disasters. Project activities include policy review at national and municipal scales, interviews with about the role of municipalities on disaster management and their data governance capacity, a capacity building event, a policy report as well as advocacy meetings. The planned project activities in cooperation with the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality will strengthen the data-driven disaster governance capacity of the institution that considers multiple and intersectional vulnerabilities, ensure informed participation of local civil society in disaster governance, get inspirations from international examples for the preparation and monitoring of disaster policies and actions, and propose a model from Mersin that might be duplicated in other cities.
