After having completed his secondary education at Istanbul St. Joseph High School and his undergraduate studies at the Middle East Technical University at the Department of Economics and Statistics in 1976, Aydın Uğur continued his postgraduate studies at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He received his master’s (1983) and PhD (1986) degrees in Political Science from Ankara University Faculty of Political Science.
Uğur, who worked at the Faculty of Communication at Ankara University (1981-1989) and at the French Speaking Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Marmara University (1989-1997), joined Istanbul Bilgi University since its foundation and held several administrative positions at this university. Having worked as the Dean of the Faculty of Communication between 1997 and 2004, he served as the founding director of the first Cultural Studies MA Programme in Turkey. Aydın Uğur also served as the Rector of the university between 2004 and 2009.
Prof. Dr. Aydın Uğur, who is the author of numerous articles published nationally and internationally about the issues at the intersection of culture/politics/communication, has also been serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities alongside his faculty post at Istanbul Bilgi University’s Department of Sociology since 2010. Aydın Uğur, lately focused his work on “alternative modernities” and issues of identity, has continuously scrutinized the subject of relation establishment between academia and social sciences.
Bekir Ağırdır was born in Çal/Denizli in 1956. He graduated from the Middle East Technical University/Faculty of Administrative Sciences, Department of Business Administration in 1979. During 1908-2003, he held administrative positions in various industrial corporations. Between 2003 and 2005, Ağırdır served as the Executive Director of the History Foundation and has been a managing partner at KONDA Research and Consultancy since 2005. He is the founder of the Democratic Republican Programme and an active member of several NGOs including the Turkish Social Economic Political Studies Foundation (TÜSES) and EYMİR Cultural Foundation. Ağırdır is also a columnist for T24.com.tr and a political commentator at NTV.
Deniz Kirazcı has been working as an executive in the private and non-governmental sectors for over 40 years. He played an active role in several sectoral and institutional transition projects. After having received his undergraduate degree from Istanbul University’s Faculty of Economics, he completed his master’s degree in Public Finance at Northeastern University. Kirazcı further received his PhD degree in Organizational Behavior from the Case Western Reserve University. He gave part-time lectures at Sabancı University; directed workshops on participatory strategic planning and organisational design. Kirazcı, who is among the founders of TESEV, spends his time working on projects he attaches importance to.
Erdal Batmaz was born in 1960 in Ağrı. He graduated in 1984 from Ankara University Faculty of Political Science, Department of Economics. He worked as an Expert and Consultant at the Prime Ministry of the Republic of Turkey. He worked at DESİYAB within the framework of Konrad Adenauer Foundation scholarship. He held several administrative positions at Emlak Bank where he lastly served as the Deputy Director General and the Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board. Furthermore, he served as a Board Member in several insurance and tourism companies. He served as a Board Member at the Capital Markets Board of Turkey for two terms between 1997 and 2003. Since 2003, he has been serving as the Managing Director of the Board of Şekerbank.
Until 1983, Hasan Ersel worked as faculty member at Ankara University Faculty of Political Science where he had received his PhD in 1971. Subsequently, he worked at the Capital Markets Board of Turkey as the Chief Economist; at the Central Bank of Turkey first as the General Director of Research, Planning and Education Department and then as the Deputy Governor; at Yapı Kredi Bank as the Chief Assistant to the General Director and later as a member of the Executive Board. He published articles and books on economics and political science.
Murat Güvenç was born in Ankara in 1953. Following St. Joseph High School, he graduated from the Middle East Technical University, Department of Department of City and Regional Planning, received his master’s degree in City Planning from the same department, continued his doctoral studies in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Louvain. Between 1983 and 2005, he worked as a faculty member at METU, Faculty of Architecture. He has published numerous articles and books on Urban Ecology, Metropolitan Industrial Geography, Istanbul, Urban Planning and Urban Sociology. He received METU Mustafa Parlar Foundation Award for his PhD thesis titled “Introduction to Structural Landscape Analysis”. He served as the curator for the Social an Economic Geography section of the urban exhibition “Istanbul 1910-2010” which was opened within the framework of 2010 European Capital of Culture at Santral Istanbul.
Having worked as a faculty member at Istanbul Bilgi University’s Graduate Programme in Architectural Design between 2005 and 2010, Prof. Güvenç also served as the Vice-Rector of Bilgi University during 2007-2010. Prof. Güvenç gave lectures on Migration Studies, Urban Sociology, Demography and Methodology as a guest lecturer at Bogazici University’s Department of Sociology between 2006 and 2014. He served as a Board Member between 2000-2013 and the Chairman of the Board between 2009-2012 of the History Foundation,
member of Advisory Committee of TUBITAK SOBAG (on Urban and Regional Problems an Studies) in 2014. Prof. Güvenç is the Director of the Istanbul Studies Centre of the university.
Erol Katırcıoğlu was born in Istanbul in 1951. After completing his degree at the Istanbul Economic and Commercial Sciences Academy in 1975, he went to the University of Wisconsin for his doctoral studies with a “special student” status in 1981. He completed his PhD at Marmara University in 1985 and subsequently started working as a guest lecturer at the University of Wisconsin. He came back to Turkey in 1987 and started working as a faculty member at Marmara University’s Department of Economics (English) where he became an associate professor in 1990. Between 1991 and 1993, he served as the Economic Adviser to Deputy Prime Minister Erdal İnönü and served as the “economist member” at the drafting committee of the Competition Law. He became a professor in 1996 and served as the Vice Rector of Istanbul Bilgi University between 2001 and 2005 where became the Head of the Economics Department in 2005 and was elected into the Board of Trustees in 2008. Having parted with the university in 2012, Katırcıoğlu has been a columnist for various daily newspapers like Radikal, Taraf and Star since 1996. He is currently working as a faculty member at Marmara University’s Department of Economics (English).
Alp Orçun was born in Istanbul in 1948. He completed his secondary education at Istanbul Lisesi/Istanbuler Gymnasium (1959-1966) and his undergraduate studies at Ankara University Faculty of Political Science, Department of Economics-Public Finance (1966-1970).
Orçun, who worked as an economics correspondent at Barış Newspaper; the Istanbul representative of Anka News Agency; a research assistant at Economics Department of Marmara University and the editor in chief of Dünya Newspaper, served as the Corporate Communications Director of the Eczacıbaşı Group and as the General Secretary of Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı Foundation. Currently, he is working as the Adviser to the Chairman of the Board at the Eczacıbaşı Group.
After she graduated from Ankara University Communication Faculty, she worked in TRT News Center for 10 years. After she left TRT, she worked as a senior reporter and manager in Güneş Neswspaper’s Ankara and Istanbul bureau, which had the highest circulation for a period of time. After leaving journalism, she became the public relations director of a holding company. She served as a consultant/director for Istanbul Television from outside while she was the PR director of the largest advertising company at that time after her five years mission ended at the holding company. She published TÜSİAD’s public media organ GÖRÜŞ while she continued her job at the advertising company. After she left, she worked for TÜSİAD for a little period of time and in 1993 she established her own company. She kept publishing GÖRÜŞ in her own company until 2004.
In her 45 years of professional experience in the communications sector, she has also from time to time worked in the area of political communications and to this day also lectures at several universities.
She served as a board member for 3 years in both TESEV and Özel Sektör Gönüllüler Derneği and 1 year in TÜHİD. She continues being a board member of Uluslararası Şeffaflık Derneği Turkey.
